Pirates of the Caribbean: One Last Chance

The Pirate King’s plan had worked, and Admiral Beckett’s flagship, the Endeavour, exploded from the cannon fire. The Seven Pirate Lords and Will Turner’s crews threw their hats in victory, and even Jack Sparrow threw his hat, only to make Mr. Gibbs go get it afterwards.

In everyone’s shouts of victory, a young girl’s ethereal shrieks of terror and sorrow went unheard.

As Jack Sparrow walked along with two ladies, he came to where his ship, the Black Pearl, was supposed to me moored, but all he saw was a dinghy. The sun set below the horizon, a green flash rose above the sea, and a small girl wavered into existence in the dinghy. She sat there, long dark hair tied back in a ponytail, and bright, golden, catlike eyes stared at Jack, unnerving him a little, but he didn’t show it. It seemed like she was staring straight through his body and examining his soul. Her black tank top and black pants were slightly ragged, but she seemed not to care.

Jack’s two lady friends slapped him and left, after he had said everything that he had tricked them about. He looked to the golden eyed girl and she looked him straight in the eyes. He saw flashes of memory that weren’t his, but were eerily brutal.

A flash of a baby crawling to her mother, then a splash of blood and the mother is on the floor, a great puddle of red growing beneath her.

Another flash of the same baby, now a year older, bright green eyes clouded with tears, walking on a bridge, laying down, singing and crying herself to sleep.

An image of the child, now three, training with a large man who looked like Davy Jones.

Another image of the child with Jones, and they were in a heated battle, neither holding back. The child, dark hair in her face, knocked the sword out of her master’s hand, and pointed her own sword at his throat, whispering one word to him.

The child, now ten, has blossomed into a pure and brutal fighter, the sparkle of bloodlust in her now golden, catlike eyes. Jones spoke to her and the sparkle disappeared from her eyes, replaced by an almost loving expression on her face. Only when she turned and walked away from Jones did the sparkle of bloodlust return to her eyes and the loving expression dissipated.

The child, now a young dark haired teen, stood atop the Flying Dutchman’s mizzenmast, looking at the sea, which she had come to love in her thirteen years of servitude aboard the ship. One of the sailors called to her, and she jumped down into the rigging, flipping over and over until landing hard on the deck, right in front of the sailor. He pointed at the door to the captain’s room, and she eagerly ran inside.

Her shrieks of sorrow went unheard as her beloved captain and mentor’s heart was stabbed by the dying man and Jones fell into the whirlpool created by Calypso.

Jack shook himself out of his memory-induced reverie as he took his eyes away from her catlike golden orbs, wondering. “How is she able to do that?” he thought. “To see into another’s mind and see their memories. If I saw hers, then did she see mine?”

“If you’re wondering, no, I did not see your memories.” the girl said, startling Jack out of his thoughts. He stared at her golden eyes and she stared back.

“Why do you want me?” he asked her, warily eyeing her flintlock pistol that he cursed himself for not being able to see.

“You killed Jones.” she said gravely. “My captain, my mentor, my adoptive father.” Jack’s eyes widened a little at the last one.

“I didn’t know Jones had a daughter.” he said, eyeing her oddly. “What’s your name?”

“I don’t remember my real name.” she said, looking at the pistol. “Jones named me Echo Tetsuya. Everyone else called me Zero. Bootstrap was nicer to me, though.” She looked to the sea as a wave of nostalgia washed over her. “He never called me Zero, and he never hurt me.”

“So, Echo, what brings you here?” he asked her.

“Thoughts of revenge, at first.” she said, undaunted. “But, after speaking with Will, he convinced me that revenge wasn’t the thing to do. He said that I should go find you, and told me all about your troubles with Jones. I have respected you for a while now, but that has upped your status in my book.” She smiled at him. Jack was a little unnerved that she wanted to kill him. “This is your dinghy, right?” Jack looked at her with a little interest. “I have a ship. I can take you to what you’re looking for.”

“Why would you do this for me?”

“Because, I am like you. We are both stray cats, masterless and free. We answer to no one, and no one answers to us.” she smiled at him, and gestured to her ship, the Velia Morana, which was not there when Jack had looked there last. “My brother’s up on the ship still. He’s getting ready to make way.” She turned to him. “We’d better get up there before we get left behind.” She smiled at him again and climbed up the rope that her brother tossed down to her. Jack hesitantly grabbed the rope and started to climb.

“Jayden Tetsuya, at your service.” Echo’s brother bowed low, as she passed. Jayden had bright green catlike eyes, just like Echo’s. He wore a black long sleeved shirt and black pants. He spotted Jack and bowed lower. She nodded to Jayden as he bowed once more and left.

“That’s my younger brother. He was found the same time I was by Jones.” She motioned to the rest of the crew and spoke to them. “This is Captain Jack Sparrow. He will be staying with us, and he deserves all the respect you would give me, if not more.”

“Aye aye, Captain!” the crew saluted and went back to their stations.

“Your crew seems to be very obedient.” Jack observed.

“That’s because I give them the respect they deserve.” she opened the door to the belly of the ship and walked through. “Most captains underestimate their crews and treat them like dogs.”

“If I may ask, what does the name of your ship mean?” he asked.

Velia Morana?” she said. “It means ‘hidden death.’”
