That (1)

Chais saw it first. That bluish grayish blackish purplish redish brownish thing. That thing that was making a fwoom sound that was hurting our ears. That thing that looked like a shape that couldn’t be drawn. That thing. We all cowered as it suddenly dropped straight down, with an unbearably loud sound like a steel oven was being crushed into a million pieces. Dropping almost straight on us….

Awoken with a jerk, me first, then Sahra, Noara, and Chais, I glanced around our surroundings while troublesome questions drilled into my mind. What just happened? Why did I fall asleep? Or perhaps, was I knocked unconscious? What could make that terrible commotion? And, yet, as I looked around, no answers could be gathered, only questions. What was this…smoke…coming from? What lurked between the dust and shadows that clouded their vision? And what was that humming and buzzing noise that was almost…..While we listened, entranced, all of us girls– Chais, Jiun, Sahra, and Noara –felt as if, well, it was indescribable. As if our legs were stuck but running at the same time. As if we had felt, smelled, and tasted something wonderfully and terrible delicious and yet, horrible. But we only saw a hazy, foggy, steamy, dusty, gray cloud.

“Juin?” A voice broke in. “JUIN??”

Brought back from who knows where, I whirled around to see a tall, slender figure. Did I know her?

“Yeah. I...I am her or she…well I am myself.” I stuttered nervously.

“NO WAY! I thought I’d never see you again!” I found myself enveloped in a colossal bear hug. Something about that voice—Oh, no way! Katei! Katei had been my soul sister before her family had to move. To Detroit. And Detroit is a long way from Phoenix. And had nothing in common.

“What are you doing here Katei?” I asked as soon as I was released from her grip.

“What tha? What are YOU doing here?” Katei replied. Of course, she was right. Taking yet another glance around, I realized that WE WERE NOT WHERE WE HAD STARTED. What now? Will flying pigs suddenly appear?  When my common sense returned (and my sarcasm left), Katei and I shook Chais, Sahra, and Noara back into ‘un-shock.’ In the midst of getting Noara alert (she tends to be a heavy sleeper, even though this isn’t sleep), I was suddenly gripped by some un-human strength on my forearm!

Without thinking, I reacted. By screaming, “HELP ME! A FREAKIN-”

And then I was stopped – by a hand clasped over my mouth. But my panic caused me to continue blathering muffled words.

“Kahee. caas. saha. oara. eeellllpppp eeeeeeee!”

A voice hissed into my ear. “If yooou valuue your liiife and that of the huuuman race, you will coooperate.”

Freaked out by this hissing, malevolent, voice, I shut up. Immediately. This creature could probably extinguish the flame of my life in an instant. I began to shake uncontrollably.
